The Maybach S580 definitely has luxury car presence.
Car and Driver wrote that the Maybach S580 4MATIC “doesn’t look as expensive as it is.” But what does expensive look like? If it means big and imposing, with styling and trim cues that suggest a Rolls-Royce or
then the S580 definitely looks expensive.
An argument can be made that the S580 is just a Mercedes-Benz S-Class gussied up and taken to the ball, but a lot more goes into making these cars. Maybachs represent everything the company knows about luxury and ensuring maximum comfort for the driver and passengers. They’re also exclusive—just 12,000 Maybachs were sold in 2019 (and 60,000 since launch in 2015).
These cars are, in fact, quite comparable to the best of Rolls and Bentley, and priced accordingly. The model starts at US$185,900, and quickly scoots up from there—as tested, it was US$212,050. You might think a car like this comes fully equipped, but automotive marketers are inventive.
The extras included champagne flutes (US$3,200), hand-applied two-tone Mojave Silver and (very dark) Emerald Green paint (US$14,500), and the very cool Executive Rear Seat Package (US$6,000) for chauffeured rides. That brings in the two-place rear seat with virtual thrones, a center console with folding tables, and rear heated and cooled cup holders. This may seem like the pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz universe, but in fact it’s merely the penultimate stop. There’s also a Maybach S680 with V12 power coming next year, and it should start around US$200,000. It’s rated at 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.
The Maybach is a virtual light show on wheels, and the colors can be changed.
All of the S580s are powered by a twin-turbo four-liter V8 with 496 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a 48-volt hybrid system.
